How to Apply Blusher

Blusher is a product that few women will use, which is surprising as a quick sweep of blusher can freshen your face up and give you a healthy glow. As a beauty secret weapon it takes a lot of beating.

• Before applying blusher, however, it is important to find the right colour to use. Ideally you should use a blusher the colour that you cheeks would naturally flush. Pinching your cheeks will give you a good idea what that colour should be. Blusher will look its most effective as a natural shade. As a rule, women with lighter skin should use a lighter blusher, such as rose, and women with darker skin should use red or peach colours. If you have any doubt, a friend or a make-up artist should be able to advise you on what colour looks best on you.

• Your blusher colour may also change depending on the other make-up colours you will be wearing. If you are wearing a pink lipstick for example, choose a blusher with pink undertones, and the same with red lipsticks.

• When you have decided what colour blusher to buy, you might be faced with a decision between powder and liquid blusher. This really depends on what you feel more comfortable wearing and applying. Those with dry skin may feel more comfortable wearing cream blushers, and those with oily skin may prefer powder blusher, but again it depends on what you would prefer to wear.

• When you come to applying your blusher, it is often worth applying your other make-up first. Blusher as a rule of thumb tends to be applied just before the powder finish. When you are ready to apply, smile and find the apples of your cheeks. It is here that you will be applying the blusher.

• If you are using powdered blusher, it is often best to use a large make-up brush at this point to give yourself the best possible application. Brush the powder lightly across your cheeks towards your hairline, preferably in one direction to prevent streaks. If, instead, you opted to use cream or liquid blusher, take a small dab of the blusher on your cheek, and then blend this in.

• After this, complete your look with your normal foundation powder over the top.
