Matching Lipstick and Skin Tone

Faced with a massive array of different colour lipsticks, it can sometimes feel like you are spoilt for choice. Not only can your lipstick choice affect your mood, it can also alter your whole appearance. Here we offer some suggestions of what to wear when, and the effects that different lipsticks can have on your appearance.

• For those with fair skin, any lipstick with an orange undertone should be avoided. This will only run the risk of making you appear paler than you are. Instead, try looking for lipsticks which have a blue undertone to them. These include colours such as pink, plum, wine, and some reds. Browns with a pink rather than orange undertone can also make for a dramatic look.

• For those with a medium skin tone, deep colours are the shades which will best suit you. These include browns, reds, pinks and plum coloured shades. Similarly, warm shades of lipstick are also a good colour to have, which can encompass most colours. By contrast, anything too light in colouring will leave your lips looking too pale. Light brown in particular is not your friend.

• For those with a yellowish skin tone, deep browns, reds and berry colours are best for you. These will not wash you out or stand out badly against your skin. Deep pinks will also be a good choice for you. By contrast, light shades of pink tend not to suit you. Reds and oranges too should also be avoided too.

• For those with a dark skin tone, deep tones including reds, plums, pinks and browns make for a flattering lipstick choice. Even lighter shades of pink can make a good and dramatic contrast. Lipsticks with a blue undertone always make good colours to wear. Orange and reds with an orange undertone, on the other hand, tend not to be a good choice and will contrast badly with your skin tone.
